Bags, Not Bin Bags

"After just recently seeing a young foster child drag his clothes into my sister’s place in plastic bags, my heart and stomach suddenly sunk as it brought up memories of when I lived through a bag. I thought it would have changed since I was in the system a good 6 years ago, but sadly it hasn’t.

As a child from 2 months old until I was 18 years old, I was moved from foster home, to foster home. Already not feeling a sense of worth or belonging in the world as a vulnerable and traumatised child, I wasn’t able to even feel the respect or empowerment by having a proper bag to hold my favourite toys, clothes and items in. But instead my clothes and items were treated like rubbish, placed in big black rubbish bags that made me feel even more broken and worthless – just like a piece of rubbish, picked up and dumped anywhere the Government wanted me to be. As I got to my teenage years I would never unpack, as I thought I was probably onto the next placement soon enough.

Unfortunately, a lot of children and young people in foster care within Australia have a standard measure of around 10 different placements in their lives whilst in foster care. So, a lot tend to be using these same bin bags across their placements and feeling the exact way I did, and in some cases their home becoming held within the plastic bin bags as no home might feel completely right. Every foster child and young person deserves the standard essentials when travelling, especially to a foreign and soon to be considered, new home, they at least deserve to have a proper bag to help them bring the things that they hold dear to them, the things that are so special and meaningful that they make up who they are. Let’s make some small, but extremely meaningful difference as an Australian society and change these negative experiences that these young people suffer from and make sure their next placement is just a little easier on their vulnerable hearts..

I want them to feel pride, joy and empowerment as they step into their new venture and journey with that family, to then feel the love and family support that they truly deserve.

Please donate your bag to every foster child and young person and be a part of this simple, but deeply meaningful movement of change in getting rid of these bin bags completely in their lives."

Yours Sincerely

How it works:

As a young person is yet to move into a new or another placement, ID Know Yourself will be notified by social services in Australia and our team will then meet with the child or young person’s caseworker and then the bag and positive note will be presented on behalf of you and your kind gesture. After we have given the bag to the child or young person, we will then contact you directly to thank you and detail the outcome and response from the child or young person to note - we cannot photograph, video or give much detailed information about the young person as they are under protection. But we will give you the appropriate and best details possible – such as the reaction and what was said and how they acted when they received the bag and personal message of hope.

Requirements of the bag:

The bag must be a properly fully functional bag or suitcase, with no tear and much wear – but appropriate and in perfect condition to pass on. If there are stains, broken parts or it’s a really worn out bag, we unfortunately won’t be able to take it as these young people deserve the best.
